Dr Jason McDarra performs a wide-range of foot and ankle procedures. Where possible specialising in arthroscopic (“keyhole”) surgery to address a range of underlying conditions and injuries. He employs the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques when performing foot and ankle surgery.

Foot and ankle surgery is a sub-specialty of orthopedics that deals with the treatment, diagnosis and prevention of disorders of the foot and ankle, as well as trauma.

The ankle includes three joints: the ankle joint proper or talocrural joint, the subtalar joint, and the inferior tibiofibular joint.

The ankle is one of the most commonly injured joints of the body and is frequently observed with activities that involve jumping or running.

An examination of the ankle should also include a thorough evaluation of the foot. This includes an assessment of gait pattern, standing posture, and shoe wear pattern. Any obvious gross deformity, malalignment, or atrophy should also be observed and noted.

Acute injuries to the ankle commonly result in swelling and the development of ecchymosis. Accumulation of swelling typically occurs around the lateral and/or medial malleoli, and may move distally into the foot.

Surgery is considered to be a last option when more conservative approaches fail to alleviate symptoms. Techniques such as bunionectomies may be used to surgically remove bunions and other foot and ankle deformities, arthrodesis (or fusion of joint spaces) for inflammatory processes, and surgical reconstruction to treat other deformities.
